We're damn proud of our ales and the authentic English beer engines
that serve them, at our tap-room and bar in Woodend. The beer
engines pump or draw our ales from the kegs in the cellar under the
bar in the time-honoured English tradition - only one of a handful
of authentic beer engines in the country!
What's so special ?
Well for starters the Ale is not overly fizzed or gassy like most
modern beers, and together with the action of pumping, a fine dense
head is produced and the low CO2 allows full flavour to be
developed. Next, although the ale kegs are chilled in the cool room,
the beer lines and beer pump are not chilled, so the beer is served
to you at the perfect quaffing temperature of about 8 Deg C. |

The CO2 or gas in the ales is generated during the primary
fermentation (in the fermenters) in the brewery. This gas is trapped
in the beer, generating the fine head. After a maturation period,
the ales are then racked off the yeast into kegs ready for serving.
Our hotel in Woodend serves ESB and Porter by beer-engine, year
round.
