| Most young Aussies
head over seas to check out the world beyond our sunburnt shores, and
Paul and Natasha Holgate were no exception. On holiday trips to the USA
and Europe in the 1990s they were amazed at the whole world of beer and
beer styles out there. |
|
| |
The USA was an inspiration
to the young Holgate's, who saw the thriving microbrewing industry
there and decided to just do it! Both of migrant families - Paul's
family from Manchester England and Natasha's from Sri Lanka - they
decided to quit their corporate jobs and follow their passion. Paul
originally found his love of baking cakes and pastries, making jams and
ginger beer from his Mum at home as a youngster and converted that to
all-grain brewing from first principles while at University.

Natasha's Sri Lankan heritage has given her a love of
all things food, flavour and taste for home style cooking. Growing up
in Melbourne additionally gave Natasha a passion for restaurants and
the dining experience.
The 100 year old local icon,
Keatings Hotel, in the village of Woodend in the picturesque Macdeon
Ranges made for a top spot to locate a Craft brewery. After starting
the business in 1999 and taking over the hotel in 2002, the hotel has
now been fully developed by Paul Holgate with the brewery taking pride
of place. |

The Bulls head that
forms part of the Holgate Brewhouse logo (pictured at left) and
label design is taken from the Holgate family coat of arms. The
family name of Holgate is of Old English origin, and the earliest
records of the name date back to the 1200's.
The town of Holgate in Yorkshire, England, is believed to have
common origins with the family name- and this branch of Holgates can
trace their direct family history back to Salford (Manchester) in
the early 1800s. Paul is a member of the renowned Bernie and Jean
Holgate family that migrated to Australia in 1965 from England. |
